Streaming Video
What is streaming video and how can I use it?
Streaming is used today in academia, the field of medicine, justice system, emergency situations, and the department of transportation. Streaming is the process of sending audio and video over an IP network from one to many viewers. A technique for transferring data such that it can be processed as a steady and continuous stream. With streaming, the client browser or plug-in can start displaying the data before the entire file has been transmitted. Streaming technology allows the program to download the beginning of the file, form a buffer of packets, and when an appropriate buffer is reached, the client player plays back the packets in a seamless stream. Streaming technologies are becoming increasingly important with the growth of the Internet because most users do not have fast enough access to download large multimedia files quickly.
"I don't know how many people take advantage of watching a stream of a previous lecture, but I think it is absolutely fantastic, especially for the difficult subjects like Stats and Quantitative Methods. I think (streaming) is vitally important !"
Bert Jennings, Doctoral Student commenting about streaming.
1. RealPlayer must be installed on your computer to view the stream.
<http://www.real.com/> Be sure to scroll down to the place where the FREE player is offered. The following link is a step-by-step guide to installing RealPlayer: http://technology.cehd.tamu.edu/howtos/multimedia-software/real-media-player-plug-in/
2. Copy and paste the entire URL - beginning with "http..." and ending with ".rm" into your Internet browser, such as Explorer or Netscape.
3. The browser will automatically open Real Player and begin the video.
Trouble Shooting Techniques:
1. Double check that you have copied and pasted the ENTIRE URL into your browser window to open it. The url begins with "<http://..../>http://...." and that it ends with "....rm" It must be exactly as written or it will not work.
2. It is important to have a DSL modem with a good connection to view these streams. If you have a dial-up modum in RealPlayer check the settings for bandwidth with these steps:
Go to Tools then Preferences then Connection Change both Normal and Maximum to 128 or 56 and that will bring in
the lower bandwidth.3. When you click on the URL (or press enter) to connect to the URL - the first page that comes up may say "ACTION CANCELLED". This is a good thing! Just give it a minute or so and it should go ahead and connect.
