How to Dial Into the College of Education Modem Bank
| Modem Accounts |
|
Who is eligible: All CEHD faculty and staff are eligible for a CEHD
modem account. Because of the small number of lines available on our bank
it is preferred that CEHD faculty use their CIS modem account.
All CEHD modem users require a username and password. To create your CEHD
MODEM account, e-mail help@coe.tamu.edu and request a modem
account.

| Modem Setup Instructions |
In order to use your modem account to connect, you must have Dial-Up
Networking installed. This section will describe how to install your modem and
configure Windows 95/98 to establish this connection. To complete the setup you
may need your Windows 95/98 installation CD-ROM or disks.

- If you have already installed your modem under Windows 95/98, skip to step
7.
- If your modem is not already connected to your computer, connect your modem
to your computer as described in your modem manual. OR:
- Start Windows 95/98, double-click My Computer and then double-click
Control Panel.
- Double-click Modems. This will start the Install New Modem
Wizard. Make sure the option Don't detect my modem; I will select it from
a list. is not checked and click Next.
- Windows 95/98 will search for your modem. Make sure the modem displayed
matches your modem brand and model. Click Next and then click
Finish.
*NOTE-If Windows 95/98 could not find your modem,
select your modem manufacturer and model (see your modem manual for details)
from the list presented. Then select the COM port to which your modem is
connected (probably COM1 or COM2)
- When the Modem Properties dialog box is displayed, click OK.
- Double-click on My Computer, double-click on Control Panel,
and double-click on Network (Figure 1).
If Dial-Up
Adapter appears in the Network window, skip to step 9. Otherwise,
click Add. Double-click Adapter.
- For Manufacturer, scroll down and select Microsoft, and for
Network Adapter select Dial-Up Adapter. Click OK.
Dial-Up Adapter should now appear in the Network window.
- If IPX/SPX and/or NetBEUI appear in the Network window,
highlight them and click Remove.
- If TCP/IP appears in the Network window, skip to step 10.
- Otherwise, click Add. Double-click Protocol.
- For Manufacturer, select Microsoft, and for Network
Protocols select TCP/IP. Click OK.
- TCP/IP should now appear in the Network window. Click
OK. Click Yes to restart your computer.
- Double-click My Computer, double-click Dial-Up Networking, and
double-click Make New Connection.
- In the Make New Connection Wizard (Figure 2), replace the
words My Connection with COE Connection. Click Next.
- Off-campus users should type 862-1284 for the phone number, while
those on campus should use 2-1284 (Figure 3).
- Click Next and click Finish.

| If you want to install the TAMUNet
Software: |
- For the CD, insert the CD and the installation program should load
automatically. If it does not, double-click on My Computer, then
double-click on the CD-ROM icon, then double-click on the file
"Tn70full.exe". Follow the instructions provided by the installation
program.
- For the disks, insert disk 1, double click My Computer, double click
A:, then double-click the file "Tamunet". Insert the remaining
disks when prompted.
- Click Start, click Shutdown..., click the button next to the
Restart the computer? and click Yes. After restarting your
computer, you will have a new program group called TAMUNet.
- To connect to the A&M Modem bank double-click on My Computer,
double-click on Dial-Up Networking, and double-click on TAMUNet
Connection.
- Enter your MODEMS username (in lowercase) in the User name box. Enter your
password (in lowercase) in the password box, click connect.

Solution |
| To disable call waiting |
1. Double-click COE connection, click on Dial Properties.
2. Put a check next to This location has call waiting. 3. In the
box next to To disable it, dial:, select 70#. |
| The modem does not dial |
If you do not hear the modem dial when you click connect, the modem volume
may be turned off. If you get the error There is no dialtone., make sure
the correct telephone line is plugged in to the correct port on the back of the
modem. If the correct line is plugged in, then the modem may not be installed
correctly. See your modem manual for specific instructions. |
| Modem makes a high-pitched connection noise, then displays a User Logon
Box and disconnects. |
This error is caused by using an incorrect username and\or password. Check
to see if you are typing your username in lowercase and entering the correct
MODEMS Password. If you have not set up a MODEMS account see the Modems Accounts
Section. |
| Modem dials but can't establish a reliable connection with a 56K modem. |
Double-click My Computer, Dial-Up Networking, right click on
your connection and select Properties. Click Configure, Select the
Connection tab, click Advanced. Under Extra Settings, Enter
"+MS=11,1", "+MS=V34", or "-V90=0" This is a compatibility
issue, one of the three above strings should help. |
