Blocked Attachments

Exchange/Outlook automatically blocks attachments with certain extensions.  Most of these are extensions used by the Windows Operating System that are rarely needed to be sent via e-mail.  The reason these types of files are blocked is because they are frequently used  for propogating computer viruses.

Blocked attachments will appear in your message associated with the following message:

Access to the following potentially unsafe attachments has been blocked

However, if you discover that you really need to send/receive such attachments you have a couple options.

  • Ask the sender to rename to file to have a non-blocked extension. For example, rename the file "mydatabase.mdb" to "mydatabase.mdb.txt" and send the renamed file.  You will have to rename it back in order to open it.
  • There is a 3rd party Outlook plugin that will allow you to change the list of blocked extensions. You need to contact Computer Support (help@coe.tamu.edu) to request installation of this plugin.
